Penalty Points to Replace Corporal Punishment

Seoul schools will impose penalty points on misbehaving students instead of corporal punishment, the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education said Tuesday.

Over 110 primary and secondary schools will run the ``green mileage'' system under which students who are caught smoking or fighting among other infractions will receive 20 penalty points.

Those who reach a certain number of points will be subject to other administrative punishments under school rules. ``This system will help teachers discipline students without infringing on their human rights,'' said an official of the education office. Corporal punishment is allowed at schools on a limited basis.

Schools will instantly send messages to parents cell phones when their children receive penalty points. Students with punitive scores can remove the handicap scores by attending remedial education classes or taking part in volunteer activities.

I'll believe it when I hear it works from foreign teachers who don't see students being hit anymore . . . or students being forced to do stress positions that I did during Basic back in Canada . . .
